Day 1 - Sprint - Friday 18th April

Venue
  • The Arena is located in Sheffield Peace Gardens, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, UK.
  • Entry to Sheffield Peace Gardens is on foot, public transport is readily available within the City Centre, with park and ride for trams, and the train station being easily accessible to the Arena. Please see the JK25 Sprint page for more information.

  • Hot and Cold food will be available on the day from mobile catering and from local cafes.
Races
  • Race date: Friday 18th April 2025. Estimated start window 11am-3pm.
  • Elite sprint races for M/W21E. Other class runners (for example, but not limited to, M/W 18E and 20E) may enter this race and be counted in the WRE results. They will be divided for the purposes of the JK results into their own classes.
  • Expected winning time 12-15 minutes.
  • Anyone entering the World Ranking courses must provide their IOF ID if they would like to receive World Ranking points. Anyone entering these classes without an IOF ID will not receive World Ranking points. IOF World Ranking IDs can be found here.
  • The embargoed area can be seen on the JK25 Embargos page. You may be staying within the embargo; on the morning of the event, we would ask competitors in the spirit of fairness, not to wander around the competition area but to proceed straight to the Assembly area. The same applies to those arriving by public transport or parking close to the city centre. Having deposited bags and picked up your bib numbers, you should follow the taped route to your designated start.
  • Sheffield has lots of accommodation available. Please see JK25 Accommodation page for further details.
  • SI punching will be used with SIAC enabled.
  • The start will be a timed start with changes to start times not permitted.
  • For those using contactless punching the finish will be contactless.
  • A model area and map will be provided on the day.
  • No training opportunities will be provided on the terrain.

Maps and Terrain
  • A4 map (probably with a map flip), to ISSprOM 2019-2, scale 1:4000, contour interval 2.5m, digitally printed on waterproof paper. Map updated 2023/24 by Ian Cooper (SYO).
  • Previous maps of Sheffield City Centre can be seen on Routegadet from 2019 and 2021 events.
  • The terrain is a typical city centre with pedestrianised areas, café culture, trams, shoppers and green spaces. There is much ongoing construction work There are many steps, slopes, paths, paved and grassed areas. Multi-level mapping will be used in several places.
Clothing and footwear
  • Shorts and vests are permitted
  • Shoes with some form of grip for off-road running are recommended
  • Shoes with metal spikes or dobs are not permitted.
Transport
  • No transport will be provided.

Day 2 - Middle Distance - Saturday 19th April

  • Tankersley/Westwood Country Park south west of junctions 35A/36 from the M1.

  • From the main car parking it is approximately a 2.5km walk with 40m of climb to the arena.

  • Tankersley contains a wealth of detail with many bell pits, bomb craters and myriads of paths created by local people spread across mixed vegetation comprising natural oak woodland with bluebells through to reclaimed spoil heaps with maturing shrubs and young trees.

Races
  • Race date: Sunday 20th April 2025. Estimated start window 10am-2pm.
  • Elite Long Distance Races for M/W21E. Other class runners (for example, but not limited to, M/W 18E and 20E) may enter these races and be counted in the WRE results. They will be divided for the purposes of the JK results into their own classes.
  • Expected winning time 88-92 minutes.
  • If there are more than 80 entries on M21E, then athletes will be split into two parallel courses. The best ranked athletes based on results from Day 2 will start in the same top-ranked elite class (e.g., M21E1). The Organisers may include a limited number of “wild cards” in the top-ranked elite class, subject to the approval of the IOF Event Adviser.

  • Previous maps can be seen at Wharncliffe National 2022.
  • Wharncliffe is an outstanding and formidable area for orienteering. It includes a wide range of terrain types, including a forested plateau, an open moorland and a rocky escarpment cratered with mine workings and capped by a gritstone edge, the magnificent Wharncliffe Crags. Wheata Woods to the East has an abundance of thickets.
Clothing and footwear
  • Full body cover is compulsory.
  • Shoes with grip are needed.
  • In the event of extreme weather conditions, the organiser may on the day require all competitors to carry a weatherproof raincoat or anorak with a hood.
Transport
  • No transport will be provided, other than from car parking to the arena.
